This block lasts for 2 weeks, and you’ll be placed at either Groote Schuur Hospital (GSH) or New Somerset/Red Cross Hospitals (NSH/RXH). They require you to purchase a R200 textbook, which is the main source for ward rounds and questions. While it’s challenging to memorize the entire book in two weeks, it’s still useful for future reference. I focused on the lecture slides for the exam, which was more practical. In surgery, it’s helpful to know the pathology beforehand, and you should ask to assist or scrub in when possible for hands-on experience with simpler procedures. I was assigned to the oncology firm at GSH, which wasn’t my favorite. Some doctors had high expectations and weren’t very approachable, but it varies. Also, there’s only one portfolio case required, so it’s manageable.
