LECTURE NOTES:
- [ ] the different fluid compartments
- [ ] factors that influence movement of water across the compartments
- [ ] why is it critical to ensure that ECF is maintained at the correct volume and osmolarity and what are the consequences if they are changed
- [ ] effect of volume and osmolarity changes in the fluid compartment
Normal composition of body fluids:
- depends on adipose vs muscle mass
- total water declines with age
Adult Male:
- 60% of the body is made up of water
- Of that 60%, 33% is ICF and 21.5% is interstitial (ECF) fluid.
- Plasma accounts for 4.5% of this
- Other body fluids make up the last 1%
Adult female:
- 50% of the body is made up of water
- Of that, 27% is ICF and 18% is interstitial fluid (ECF).
- Plasma accounts for 4.5%
- Other body fluids make up the last 1%
